On December 6th, the 289th Sunshine Forum was held online by the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Prof. Alex Kuvarega from University of South Africa was invited to give an academic report entitled "New photocatalysts for water/wastewater treatment applications", which was chaired by Dr. Zheng Zhang. The faculty members, graduate and undergraduate representatives participated in the discussion.
Alex Kuvarega is a Professor at the Institute for Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of South Africa. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa in 2013. His current research interests are in the fields of heterogenous catalysis and advanced oxidation processes for environmental applications, specifically water treatment.
He has authored and co-authored over 100 journal articles and book chapters (h-index 29). He is the leader of the Nanostructured Materials Thematic Area at the Institute. Prof Kuvarega has graduated 7 MSc and 3 PhD students and is currently supervising and co-supervising a total of 15 MSc and PhD students and is mentoring one Postdoctoral Fellow. He has presented at several local and international conferences and is a recipient of several internal grants for projects on heterogenous catalysis and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). He is a reviewer for several journals including Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, Separation and Purification Technology, Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, and Chemosphere. He is an Editorial Board Member as Topic Editor for the journal Catalysts and serves as a member of the Scientific Committee of the International PhD School on Advanced Oxidation Processes.
